1. What was the hobby of the king?
Answer: The king was fond of gardening. He spent a lot of time tending his garden, planting the finest plants, fruit trees, vegetables and crops.

2. ‘The king did not have any children.’ What will happen to the kingdom?
Answer: As the king grew older, everyone got more and more worried. After his death, who would take over the kingdom?

3. How will the king find his successor?
Answer: To find a successor, the king thought of an idea. He decided to distribute some seeds to all the children in the country. The child who grows the biggest, healthiest plant will become the prince or the princess.

4. Why did the king choose such a test to find his successor?
Answer: Only the honest will rule the kingdom justly. To find an honest child, the king chooses such a test.

5. How many days will it take for a seed to sprout?
Answer: 

6. What care will you give to grow a seed into a plant?
Answer: I will sow the seed in fertile soil, water and manure it.

7. Will Pingala go to the palace?
Answer: Yes, He will go to the palace.

8. What will be his thoughts?
Answer:
I tried my best to grow the seed. I gave the best soil and manure to it. But the seed did not grow. How could I show the empty pot to the King?

9. What did Pingala’s father suggest to him?
Answer: Father advised Pingala that if he go to the king with the empty pot, at least the King would know that he tried his best.

10. Why did the other children laugh at him?
Answer: Pingala is holding an empty pot in his hand. So the other children laughed at him.

11. Will he go back home disappointed?
Answer: No. He will be rewarded for his honesty.

12. Why was the king unhappy?
Answer: Because the King knew that every child standing in front of him was dishonest.

13. What did he expect from the children?
Answer: The King expected that they would come before him with an empty pot.

14. Will the king be angry with Pingala?
Answer: No. The King will feel happy after seeing Pingala's honesty.

15. Why did Pingala hold his head down?
Answer: Because he thought that, he could not treat the seeds given by the King well.

16. Why did the king smile?
Answer: He gave roasted seeds to the children. He identified the honesty of Pingala. So he smiled.

17. The king gave roasted seeds to the children. Yet they came up with flowery plants. How did they grow the plants?
Answer: The seed given by the King didn't grow. So they choose another seed and made the plant.

Activity 1

The king ordered his men to prepare a notice for this announcement. Help them draft it.
Activity 2

They all held well-grown plants. Pingala stood watching them sadly.
What will be the thoughts of Pingala? Write down his thoughts.
My God! what should I do? Everyone's seed has grown. My seed is not yet sprouted out. All are going to the court to show their plants. I also wanted to submit my plant before the King. But how could I go without a plant? If I show him this seed, he will think that I didn't treat it well. Everyone will laugh at me. What can I do? Give me away.

Activity 3
Pingala’s father was standing in front of his house. He saw the king’s messengers riding towards him. ‘My God! What happened to my son?’ he thought. One of  the messengers said, ‘You are wanted in the palace.’
Complete the conversation between the messenger and Pingala’s father.
Messenger: You are wanted in the palace.
Pingala’s father: Me? Is there any problem?
Messenger: No. there is good news for you.
Pingala’s father: Good news! What is it?
Messenger: Your son is selected as a prince of the court.
Pingala’s father: Oh my God! I can't believe this. How is it happen? He failed in the competition. His seeds didn't sprout out.
Messenger: No no, He won the competition. The seed given was a roasted one. That will not sprout out. Only your son told the truth. So he was selected.
