• Prepare a narrative on the lesson ‘Rosa Parks sat still’.
The story of Rosa Parks and her fight to demand justice started on 1st December ,1955.Rosa Parks was a law abiding Afro-American lady .She was mild mannered and was a seamstress at the departmental store. On that ominous day, after a hectic day's work ,in the evening, dead tired, Rosa walked towards her bus.She couldn’t think of anything other than taking rest. Her feet were tired and she wanted to sit down. After paying her fare, she was relieved to find the bus empty. She took a nearby seat. The bus driver didn’t know who the black lady was.He didn’t know anything about her tired legs craving for rest. But he noticed one thing that the lady wasn’t white and he thought that was all he needed to know which later landed his company into a quagmire of troubles. The bus was about to leave. One by one the seats were occupied. There was a rule that each time a white entered the bus,the black has to get up and offer his seat.Almost all the seats were filled and the only black who sat on the seat was Rosa Parks.A white man boarded and threw a troubled look at her, obviously hinting her to get up. But Rosa didn’t give a damn. The driver smelt something fishy and ordered her to get up .But she didn’t move. She thought that the white man wasn’t as tired as she and neither was he sick or physically
challenged. Moreover, she had paid the same fare that the white man had.A law which segregates people based on the colour of their skin is not a fair law and therefore it should be broken. The irritated passengers cursed abuses at her and the angry driver called the police.Rosa didn’t deny what she had done and she was arrested and fined and was taken to jail. The blacks were infuriated at this. They wanted to react. But since they couldn’t protest against the authorities ,the decided to revolt against the bus company. They exhorted the black community to denounce the Montgomery buses massively. What followed was unbelievable. The buses run almost empty. There was not a single black passenger seen in the buses.Since, the private buses were most used by the blacks, the bus company suffered a huge loss.Rosa was taken to court. She was asked to pay the fine .On her lawyer’s advice she didn’t.She was denied justice there.Rosa went to the higher authorities, and finally the supreme court verdict
allowed the blacks to be treated as equals in the buses.Rosa's one single decision has sparked the entire community to fight for their rights.Rosa was called as the mother of American civil rights and the first lady who ffoughtfor the blacks’civil rights.Rosa Parks had fought against injustice and her story reminds us about many other social reformers who have fought for their fellowmen. Gandhiji also had a similar predicament. While travelling in a train ,he was knocked out of the train because he was not white.Rosa Parks and Montgomery bus boycott are but memorable chapters in the history of America. It has accelerated the American civil Rights Movement.
