Answer the following questions

1. Do you think the cabman is a good detective? Why?
Answer: The cabman was not a good detective. He only identified Conan Doyle when he saw the name written on his luggage, even though he had also read about Conan Doyle's visit to Paris in the newspaper and noticed his suit made of good English tweed.

2. Who did the conductor put off the train? Why?
Answer: The conductor mistakenly put another American off the train at Dijon, thinking he was Mark Twain. The confusion happened because Twain warned the conductor that he might probably protest loudly when tried to wake him up. 

3. Why did it take Albert Einstein so long to speak?
Answer: Albert Einstein didn't feel the need to say anything until he had something important to communicate. He said that it took so long to speak because everything was alright till that day. 

4. Do you think everything was alright till Einstein complained about the soup?
Answer: Everything was alright for young Albert Einstein until he found the soup too hot. This implies he didn't speak because he had no reason to until that moment. It is interesting even as a child, Einstein had a unique approach to communication. 
Activity 1

1. a. Try to find the answers to the following funny questions.  
 The pictures may help you. (Textbook Page No: 82)

1. Which letter of the alphabet contains a huge quantity of water?
Answer: C (Sea)

2. Why are fish so smart?
Answer: They go to the best school. (Group of fish is called School of fish)

3. Why did the kid eat his homework?   
Answer: Because the teacher said it was a piece of cake (simple homework)
    
4. The more you take, the more you leave behind. What is it? 
Answer: Footsteps

5. Which building has a number of stories?  
Answer: A library
                                
6. Why is history a sweet subject?       
Answer: Because it’s full of dates
                                
7. "I have teeth but can't eat." Who am I? 
Answer: A comb

8. What has a face and two hands,  but no arms or legs?
Answer: A clock

9. What goes up as soon as the rain comes down?
Answer: Umbrella
                   
10. Which two words, when combined, hold a lot of letters?   
Answer: Post office

b. Sit in pairs and frame at least two funny, tricky and interesting questions. 

• What has keys but can't open locks?
Answer: A piano

• I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with wind. What am I?
Answer: An echo

• What is full of holes but still holds water?
Answer: A sponge

• What can travel around the world while staying in a corner?
Answer: A stamp
Activity 2
2. Do you remember any funny experience in your life? Describe one of them below.
One day, I was playing in the park with my favourite ball. I saw a squirrel watching me from a tree. I thought the squirrel wanted to play. I decided to play with the squirrel. I picked up the ball and threw it gently towards the squirrel. I was surprised, the squirrel jumped in the air and landed right on top of the ball! The ball started rolling with the squirrel hanging on. I ran after them, laughing the whole way. When I finally caught up the squirrel jumped off and scampered away up a tree. And from that day on, whenever I saw a squirrel, I remembered his funny adventure in the park.

Activity 3
3. There are many popular jokes in your mother tongue. They are often published in magazines or journals. There are many such jokes in movies too. Collect some of them. Present them in your class. 
Try to translate one of them into English. 

• പോലീസുകാരന്‍ സ്ത്രീയോട്: നിങ്ങളുടെ കുഞ്ഞിനെ മോഷ്ടിച്ച സ്ത്രീയെ ഓര്‍മ്മയുണ്ടോ?
• സ്ത്രീ: മുഖം ഓര്‍മയില്ല. പച്ച ഷിഫോണ്‍ സാരിയാണ് ധരിച്ചിരുന്നത്. കയ്യില്‍ ഡയമണ്ട് പതിച്ച വളയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.ഒരു ഗോള്‍ഡന്‍ വാച്ചും.

• Policeman to woman: Do you remember the woman who stole your baby?

• Woman: I don't remember the face. She wore a yellow chiffon saree. She had a diamond-studded bracelet on her hand and a golden watch.

• popsicle: a piece of flavoured ice or ice cream on a stick
• quilt: a warm bed cover 
• revelled: enjoyed something very much
• setting  off:  beginning a journey
• tweed: a rough-surfaced woollen cloth originally produced in Britain
• unruly behaviour:  disobedient behaviour
• wrinkle: folding/mark on the skin
