♦ How did Helena Hilario and Mario Pece get the thread for the film?
Helena Hilario and Mario Pece were inspired to create the film "Umbrella" after Hilario received a phone call from her sister, who visited an orphanage in Palmas, Brazil. ♦ Why did Joseph, the young boy from Palmas, have a special attachment to a yellow umbrella?

On a rainy day, his father used a yellow umbrella to protect them as they walked to an orphanage. His father left him there, hoping it would be a better place for Joseph to grow up. The yellow umbrella became a symbol of his father's love and the hope of reuniting with his family someday.

Activity 1
1. Imagine, one day the yellow umbrella spoke to Joseph, “I’m ready to take you anywhere you'd like to go." Where do you think he would want to go?

• He might choose to go back to the rainy day when he and his father walked to the orphanage.
• He might wish to visit the country or city of his father's origin, wherever that may be.
• He might prefer to visit a bustling, colourful carnival or fair.
• He might go for a travel to a calm and attractive beach at sunset.
♦ Can you develop a story using any one of the plots given above?

Answer:

One day, as Joseph sat by the window of the orphanage, he heard a soft whisper. It was the yellow umbrella, speaking to him for the first time. "Joseph, I'm ready to take you anywhere you'd like to go," it said gently.

Joseph's heart skipped a beat. Without hesitation, he replied, "Take me back to the rainy day when my father and I walked to the orphanage."

In an instant, the umbrella opened up, and a magical gust of wind enveloped Joseph. He found himself standing in the familiar rain-soaked street, holding his father's hand. The yellow umbrella shielded them from the downpour, just as it had on that fateful day.

As they walked, Joseph felt the warmth of his father's presence and the comfort of the umbrella's protection. He looked up at his father, who smiled down at him with love. The rain seemed to wash away all the worries and fears that had plagued Joseph's heart.

They reached the orphanage, and Joseph knew this was the moment his father would leave him. But this time, he felt a sense of peace. He understood that his father's decision was made out of love and hope for a better future.

As his father walked away, the yellow umbrella whispered, "Remember, Joseph, love and hope will always guide you, no matter where you are."

Joseph watched his father disappear into the rain, but he no longer felt alone. The memory of that day, now filled with understanding and acceptance, became a source of strength for him. The yellow umbrella had not only taken him back in time but had also helped him find closure and peace.

Dear Dad,

Hope you're fine, wherever you are. It's been a long time since we were together. I miss you a lot, Dad. I remember a rainy day when we walked under a big yellow umbrella. It was the last time I saw you, and that memory has stayed with me ever since. The yellow umbrella has become a symbol of your love and protection. Every time it rains, I think of you and the hope that one day we will be reunited.

I want you to know that I'm doing my best here at the orphanage. I've made some friends, and the people here are kind. But nothing can replace the warmth and comfort of being with you. I hold on to the hope that we will see each other again someday.

Take care, Dad. I love you and miss you more than words can express.

LOVE,
Joseph

Friends in a distant land
Joseph : Gerald, being in this camp is really tough, especially for us kids.
Gerald : Yeah, I miss my mom and dad a lot.
Joseph : I know how you feel. My dad had to leave me here, and I haven't seen him since.
Gerald : That's terrible.
Joseph : But you know what, Gerald? We can be like a family here and take care of each other.
Gerald : You're right, Joseph. Friends can be like family too.
Joseph : And, Gerald, the school here is not like what it used to be. It's not easy to learn.
Gerald : I noticed that too. It's very crowded and noisy.
Joseph : But we can't give up on learning. Education is important for our future.
Gerald : I like that idea, Joseph. Let's help each other learn and get smarter.
Joseph : Great! We can be study buddies.

♦ Write a paragraph about the hardships faced by child refugees.
A few hints are given below.
Answer:
Hardships faced by child refugees
Child refugees face many hardships that significantly impact their lives. They often lack basic needs like shelter, food, and clean water. This leads to malnutrition and poor health. They live in unstable environments and face violence and exploitation. Their education is often disrupted, making it difficult for them to continue their studies and secure a better future. Being separated from their families and the uncertainty of their situation can lead to severe psychological distress. Despite these challenges, many child refugees show great strength and determination to overcome their circumstances.

4. Here is a conversation between Hilario’s sister and Joseph when they started distributing toys. Let’s complete the conversation.

Hilario's sister : Hello, what should I call you?

Joseph: I'm Joseph.

Hilario's sister : Joseph, why are you not playing with the other children? Don't you like toys?

Joseph: It's not that I don't like toys. It's just that they don't mean much to me.

Hilario's sister: Oh, I see. Is there something else you would like instead?

Joseph: Yes, I would really like a yellow umbrella. It reminds me of my father.

Hilario's sister: A yellow umbrella? That's an unusual request. Why does it remind you of your father?

Joseph: The last time I saw him, he was holding a big yellow umbrella. It was raining, and he used it to keep us dry as we walked to the orphanage. I haven't seen him since then.

Hilario's sister: That sounds like a very special memory. I'll see what I can do to find you a yellow umbrella, Joseph.
