Names and Names - Questions and Answers

♦ What did Kunhichirutha love doing at the gate?
She loved to look at passing vehicles and pedestrians.

♦ What was the climate like?
It was the end of winter. The air was warming up. But there was still the occasional cold wind. It had been a cold winter in New Jersey.

♦ Why did Kunhichirutha puzzle about the varying length of the day and night?
When Kunhichirutha arrived in July, the sun set only at eight thirty. The day was more than fifteen hours long. In winter, the sun set a little before five,  and the day lasted only a little less than ten hours.

♦ Why was Kunhichirutha startled?
Kunhichirutha was startled because Kate, her classmate, called out to her unexpectedly and mispronounced her name as "Kun-hi-chi-ryoo-tha!".

♦ Why didn't Kunhichiru tha feel a stranger at all at the school?
Kunhichirutha didn't feel like a stranger at school because her classmates and teachers were very kind and helpful. They made her feel comfortable. Ms. Hopkins, who taught Mathematics, went out of the way to make her comfortable. The only thing that upset her was the way her classmates pronounced her name.

♦ Why did Kunhichirutha think it was rude to call Prakash by name?
Kunhichirutha thought it was rude to call Prakash by name. All her classmates called him 'Mr. Prakash'. In Kerala, she would have addressed him as 'Prakash Uncle'.' Using 'Uncle' shows respect and warmth, which was a common cultural practice in her home country.

♦ What was Kunhichirutha's reaction when Prakash pronounced her name correctly?
Kunhichirutha was delighted. Prakash Uncle was the first person outside her family to pronounce her name perfectly in New Jersey. She nodded her head and beamed at him.

♦ Why was Prakash surprised at Kunhichirutha's name?
Prakash was surprised at Kunhichirutha’s name because he wondered if children still had names like hers. It seemed unusual or rare to him, which made him curious enough to ask about it.

♦ How did Kunhichirutha get her name?
Kunhichirutha got her name from her great-grandmother, who had become a schoolteacher at the age of eighteen. Though she had never met her, she had seen a fading photograph of her.
♦ What surprised Kunhichirutha when Antoinette pronounced her name right?
Kunhichirutha was surprised because Antoinette pronounced her name fairly well, especially the ‘nh’ sound, which many others found difficult.

♦ Why do you think Antoinette was able to pronounce Kunhichirutha's name fairly well?
Antoinette was likely able to pronounce Kunhichirutha's name fairly well because she made an effort to learn the correct pronunciation, just like Kunhichirutha did with her name. Since both had uncommon names, they understood the importance of saying them correctly.

We make some of the best foods ever, like pizza and pasta. Italy is also home to amazing places like the Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Canals of Venice. If you visit Italy, you might even spot animals like the Italian wolf and wild boar. The weather is nice too, with warm summers and cool winters. Italians love to celebrate holidays like Christmas, Easter and Carnivals, where we wear colourful masks and costumes.
