1. Why did Chibi hide in the cellar?
Chibi hid himself in a cellar in the schoolhouse because he was too scared of the teacher and the other children.

3. Why was Chibi left alone at study time?
Chibi was too scared of the teacher to learn anything. He was too scared to make friends with other children. So he was left alone at study time and play time.
4. How did Chibi amuse himself during class hours?
Chibi found many ways to pass the time and amuse himself. He would just stare at the top of his desk for a long time. Sometimes he would lie gazing at the ceiling for hours. There were many things to interest him: the design on the shirt of a boy sitting next to him, or what he could see out of the window.
5. Why did everyone call Chibi Slowpoke?
Chibi came trudging to school every day. He always brought the same lunch, a ball of rice wrapped in a radish leaf. Even when it rained or stormed, he still came trudging along. So everyone called Chibi Slowpoke.
6. Who changed the way we looked at Chibi?
Mr. Isobe, the new teacher, a friendly man with a kind smile, changed the way we looked at Chibi.
7. How did Mr. Isobe encourage Chibi?

• Beginning: On the first day of school, Chibi hides because he feels different and alone. He’s small and quiet, and the other kids call him “Chibi” and leave him out.
• Middle: Chibi kept coming to school every day, even in rain or storm, with his simple lunch and zebra grass raincoat. He listened to sounds and watched insects, while others called him “Slowpoke.” Later, Mr. Isobe discovered Chibi’s talent and kindness. He praised Chibi’s drawings, nature knowledge, and handwriting, helping the class see him differently.
• Ending: At the school talent show, Chibi amazed everyone by imitating crow cries. His classmates and even adults were moved to tears after learning how much he had endured. They began to admire him and called him “Crow Boy” with respect.
• What does the story tell us about treating others who are different from us?
It teaches us to be kind and open-minded. We should take time to understand others, because everyone has something special, even if they seem different at first.
