The aeroplane looks like a giant lark, soaring high up in the sky. Its wide wings shine in the sunlight. The brave pilot sits inside and carefully guides the plane through the air. The engine makes a soft sound—purr, purr—as it flies higher and higher until it becomes a tiny speck. Then the aeroplane glides slowly and gracefully down to the earth again.

Jeannie Kirby: Jeannie Kirby was an American poet best known for her thoughtful and gentle poem “I Wonder,” which beautifully captures a child’s curiosity about the world. She was born on September 9, 1925, in Vernon, Texas, to Herman Clyde Lott and Elsie Tomes. Her writing reflects a deep appreciation for nature and the mysteries of life, often seen through the eyes of a child. In 1953, she married George Linley Miller and later married Maynard Page Kirby. She had one daughter named Georjeane. Jeannie Kirby passed away on November 17, 2008, in Norfolk, Virginia, and was laid to rest at Saint Nicholas Catholic Church Columbarium in Virginia Beach. Her poem “I Wonder” remains a favourite in children’s literature, admired for its simple language and profound questions. Her famous poems include I Wonder, The Pigeon’s Story and Timid Bunnies.
