1. Hands of a clock
Look at the picture of the clock.
How many hands does it have?
What does each hand represented?
There are three hands on a clock. The shortest one is the hour hand. It represents the hour. The medium-sized hand is the minute hand. It represents the minute. The longest and the fastest hand is the second hand. It represents the second.
• Which hand turns the fastest?
Second hand

•  How much time does it take to complete one rotation?
60 seconds, which is equal to 1 minute. (This hand takes 5 seconds to move from one number to another)

• How much time does the minute hand take to complete one rotation?
60 minutes, which is equal to 1 hour. (This hand takes 5 seconds to move from one number to another). This hand completes 24 rotations in a day.

• What about the hour hand?
The hour hand takes 12 hours to complete one rotation. That is, this hand completes 2 rotations in a day.

♦ To summarise:
• The second hand takes 1 minute to complete a rotation
• The minute hand takes 1 hour to complete a rotation
• The hour hand takes 12 hours to complete a rotation

• How much time does the hour hand take to start from 12 and return to 12?
12 hours

• By this time, how many rotations would the minute hand have made?
The minute hand takes an hour to complete a rotation. So in 12 hours, it makes 12 rotations.

 • What about the second hand?
Second hand takes 1 minute for 1 rotation.
In 60 minutes (1hour), it makes 60 rotations.
So, in 12 hours, it makes 12 x 60 = 720 rotations.

 • How many rotations does the hour hand complete in a day?
The hour hand takes 12 hours to complete a rotation. So in a day (24 hours), it completes 2 rotations.
1 day  =  24 hours
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 minute = 60 seconds

• How many minutes are there in a day?
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 day = 24 hours
Therefore a day = 24 x 60 = 1440 minutes

• How many seconds?
Since a day has 1440 minutes and 1 minute has 60 seconds.
A day = 1440 x 60 = 86400 seconds

3. School starts at 10 in the morning and continues to 4 in the afternoon. There are intervals from 11:20 to 11:30 in the morning, 12:50 to 1:45 in the afternoon and 3:10 to 3:20 in the evening. How much time do students get for their studies?
Answer:
From 10 to 11:20:           1 hour 20 minutes
From 11:30 to 12:50:      1 hour 20 minutes
From 1:45 to 3:10:          1 hour 20 minutes
From 3:20 to 4:00:                     40 minutes
Total time = 3 hours 105 minutes
                = 3 hours + 60 minutes + 45 minutes
                = 3 hours + 1 hour + 45 minutes
                = 4 hours 45 minutes
Another way:
From 10 to 4                - 6 hours
Interval
From 11:20 to 11:30    - 10 minutes
From 12:50 to 1:45      - 55 minutes
From 3:10 to 3:20        - 10 minutes
Total interval         =       75 minutes
75 minutes = 60 minutes + 15 minutes = 1 hour 15 minutes
Study time = 6 hours - 1 hour 15 minutes = 4 hours 45 minutes

Answer:
From 8 am on January 7th to 8 am on January 8th - 24 hours
On January 8th, from 8 am to 3 pm - 7 hours
So, total time = 31 hous

3. An office works from 9 am to 5 pm. One of the employees went out from 11 am to 1:30 pm. How long was the person in the office?
Answer:
From 9 am to 11 am - 2 hours
From 1:30 pm to 5 pm - 3½ hours
So, total time = 2 + 3½ = 5½ hours

Another way:
From 9 am to 5 pm = 8 hours
From 11 am to 1:30 pm = 2½ hours
Time spent in the office = 8 - 2½ = 5½ hours

1. A bus started from Kozhikode at 15:30 and reached Thiruvananthapuram at 2:30. How much time did the journey take?
Answer:
15:30 means 3:30 pm
2:30 means 2:30 am
Time taken for the travel =11 hours

2. A flight started from Kozhikode at 18:40 and reached Delhi via Mumbai at 00:10. How much time did the journey take?
Answer:
18:40 means 6:40 pm
00:10 means 12:10 am
Time taken for the journey:
From 6:40 to 7          - 20 minutes
From 7 to 12             - 5 hours
From 12 to 12:10      - 10 minutes
Total time taken = 5 hours 30 minutes = 5½ hours

Answer: 29 days. 2024 is a leap year

5. In a certain year, there were 5 Wednesdays in October, but only 4 Thursdays. What day of the week was the first of  October that year?
Answer: We can see that October 31 is a Wednesday (since there are 4 Thursdays). The difference between the dates of the same days in two consecutive weeks is 7. Then 24, 17, 10 and 3 will all be Wednesdays.
Since October 3rd is a Wednesday, October 1st will be a Monday.

6. The sum of the dates of two Sundays in a month is 11. What day of the week is the first of that month?
Answer: The Difference between the dates of two consecutive Sundays will always be 7. Numbers with sum 11 and difference 7 are 2 and 9. That is, the 2nd will be a Sunday. So, 1st will be a Saturday.

7. How many times each day of the week occurs this year (2024)? Which day occurs the most number of times?
Answer:
Sunday - 52
Monday - 53
Tuesday - 53
Wednesday - 52
Thursday- 52
Friday - 52
Saturday - 52
Total - 366
This year starts on Monday. Since this is a leap year, it ends at Tuesday. So the number of Mondays and Tuesdays will be 1 more than the other days. Other days are 52. (Since there are 52 weeks in a year). Mondays and Tuesdays will be 53.
That is a total (52 x 5) + (53 x 2) = 260  106 = 366 days.

8. How many times each day of the week occurs this year (2025)? Which day occurs the most number of times?
Answer:
January 1, 2025 - Wednesday
December 31, 2025 - Wednesday

Sunday - 52
Monday - 52
Tuesday - 52
Wednesday - 53
Thursday- 52
