♦ Textbook Page 98For each of the problems below, write the answer as a single fraction and as a whole number and a fraction.
(1) If an 8 metre long string is cut into 5 equal parts, what would be thelength of each piece?• 8 metres means 5 metres and 3 metres.• If 5 metres is divided into 5 equal parts, each one will be 1 metre. If the remaining 3 metres is divided into 5 equal parts, we get ⅗ metre. That is, the length of each piece = 1 + ⅗ metre = 1⅗ metre.
(2) 15 litres of kerosene is divided equally into 4 cans. How much does each can contain, in litres?• To fill 3 litres in each can, you need 12 litres, and then there will be 3 litres left over.• If we equally distribute these 3 litres into 4 cans, each will have ¾ litres. The amount of kerosene in each can is = 3 + ¾ litres = 3¾ litres.
(3) If 25 kilograms of sugar is divided equally among 8 persons, how much would each get, in kilograms?• To give each person 3 kilograms, we need 24 kilograms. Then there will be 1 kilogram left over.• If you divide this 1 kilogram equally among 8 people, each will get an additional ⅛ kilogram.• The total amount of sugar each person will get is 3 + ⅛ kilogram = 3⅛ kilograms.
