Using a Magnetic Compass

♦ Magnetic Compass
• Magnetic Compass is an instrument used to find out the directions. 
• There is a magnetic needle in the centre of the compass. 
• This needle always points in the north-south direction. 
• The specifically marked tip of the needle indicates the north direction.

♦ Shall we help Rahan to find the directions using a compass?

When we observe the needle in the compass which Rahan holds, it can be seen that he is facing the South.

♦ Why do most of the rivers flow towards the west? 
Most rivers in Kerala flow west because the topography of Kerala slopes down from the Western Ghats, which form the eastern border of Kerala, towards the Arabian Sea in the west. Water always moves from higher to lower ground, so rivers naturally flow westward.

♦ Backwaters/Lakes
There are thirty-four backwaters in Kerala, among them some are larger than others. Out of these, twenty-seven are connected with the sea, and the remaining seven are inland backwaters.
