♦ Textbook Page: 128
♦ Multiplication and Multiples
If a number is divisible by another number, the first number is a multiple of the second number; if there is a remainder on division, it is not a multiple.
♦ Now in each pair of numbers given below, check whether the first is a multiple of the second:
(i) 7, 91
91 = 7 X 13
91 is a multiple of 7

(ii) 9, 127
127 = (9 X 14) + 1
Here we get the remainder 1.
So 127 is not a multiple of 9.

(iii) 12, 136
136 = (12 X 11) + 4
Here, we get a remainder 4.
So, 136 is not a multiple of 12.

(iv) 15, 225
225 = 15 X 15
225 is a multiple of 15

♦ Division and Factors
By the factors of a number, we mean those numbers by which this number is divisible.
♦ Now write the relation between each pair of numbers below like this, as multiplication-multiple and division-factor.
(i) 9, 72
Numbers Multiplication Division
  9, 72  72 = 9 X 8  72 is a multiple of 8.
 72 is a multiple of 9.
 72 ÷ 9 =8
 72 ÷ 8 = 9
 9 is a factor of 92.
 8 is a factor of 72.

(ii) 12, 156
Numbers Multiplication Division
  12, 156  156 = 12 X 13  156 is a multiple of 12.
 156 is a multiple of 13.
 156 ÷ 12 = 13
 156 ÷ 13 = 12
 12 is a factor of 156.
 13 is a factor of 156.

(iii) 13, 169
Numbers Multiplication Division
 13, 169  169 = 13 X 13  169 is a multiple of 13.  169 ÷ 13 = 13
 13 is a factor of 169.

(iv) 25, 375
Numbers Multiplication Division
  25, 375  375 = 25 X 15  375 is a multiple of 25.
 375 is a multiple of 15.
 375 ÷ 25 = 15
 375 ÷ 15 = 25
 25 is a factor of 375.
 15 is a factor of 375.

♦ Factors in Multiplication and Division
See if  you can mentally calculate the products below:
(i) 12 × 25
12 = 6 X 2
12 X 25 = 6 X 2 X 25 = 6 X 50 = 300

(ii) 35 × 18
        18 = 3 X 6
        35 = 5 X 7
35 X 18 = 5 X 7 X 3 X 6
             = 3 X 7 X 6 X 5 = 21 X 30 = 630

(iii) 125 × 8
          8 = 2 X 2 X 2
125 X 8 = 125 X 2 X 2
             = 250 X 2 X 2 = 500 X 2 = 1000

(iv) 125 × 24
        24 = 2 X 2 X 2 X 3
124 X 4 = 125 X 2 X 2 X 2 X 3
             = 250 X 2 X 2 X 3 = 500 X 2 X 3
             = 1000 X 3 = 30000

♦ Textbook Page: 132
♦ Now try these problems:
(i) 90 ÷ 15
     15 = 3 X 5
     90 ÷ 3 = 30
     30 ÷ 5 = 6
So, 90 ÷ 15 = 6

(ii) 900 ÷ 18
     18 = 2 X 3 X 3
     900 ÷ 2 = 450
     450 ÷ 3 = 150
     150 ÷ 3 = 50
So, 900 ÷ 18 = 50

(iii) 160 ÷ 32
     32 = 2 X 2 X 2 X 2 X 2
    160 ÷ 2 = 80
    80 ÷ 2 = 40
    40 ÷ 2 = 20
    20 ÷ 2 = 10
    10 ÷ 2 = 5
So, 160 ÷ 32 = 5

(iv) 168 ÷ 24
      24 = 2 X 2 X 2 X 3
     168 ÷ 2 = 84
       84 ÷ 2 = 42
       42 ÷ 2 = 21
       21 ÷ 3 = 7
So, 168 ÷ 24 = 7

(v) 210 ÷ 42
     42 = 2 X 3 X 7
     210 ÷ 2 = 105
     105 ÷ 3 = 35
       35 ÷ 7 = 5
So, 210 ÷ 42 = 5
♦ Common Factors
Numbers which are the factors of both the numbers are called common factors of these two numbers.
♦ Textbook Page: 134
♦ Now find the quotients below by removing common factors:
(i) 600 ÷ 150
    600 = 2 X 2 X 2 X 3 X 5 X 5
    150 = 2 X 3 X 5 X 5
Common factors: 2, 3, 5, 5
Removing the common factors, we get the quotient as 4.
So, 600 ÷ 150 = 4

(ii) 900 ÷ 180
    900 = 2 X 2 X 3 X 3 X 5 X 5
    180 = 2 X 2 X 3 X 3 X 5
Common factors: 2, 2, 3, 3, 5
Removing the common factors, we get the quotient as 5.
So, 900 ÷ 180 = 5

(iii) 225 ÷ 75
     225 = 3 X 3 X 5 X 5
      75 = 3 X 5 X 5
Common factors: 3, 5, 5
Removing the common factors, we get the quotient as 3.
So, 225 ÷ 75 = 3

(iv) 420 ÷ 105
      420 = 2 X 2 X 3 X 5 X 7
      105 = 3 X 5 X 7
Common factors: 3, 5, 7
Removing the common factors, we get the quotient as 4.
So, 420 ÷ 105 = 4
