1. What are the uses of water?
Answer:

2. What is Solute?
Answer: A Substance that dissolves is called Solute.
3. What is Solvent?
Answer: In which the solute dissolves is called a solvent.
4. The gum which sticks to the knife while cutting a jack fruit is removed using kerosene. which property of kerosene is utilised here?
Answer: Kerosene acts as a solvent here. The gum is soluble in kerosene. so the gum can be easily removed from the knife.
5. What is a Solution?
Answer: The solution is that which is formed when a solute dissolves in a solvent.
Example: In sugarsolution sugar is the solute and water is the solvent.
6. Why water is called the universal solvent?
Answer: Water is an advent that dissolves a large number of substances. Hence water is called the universal solvent.
7. Pure water is colourless, odourless and tasteless. What are the other properties of water? Making use of the pictures and table given below, discuss the properties of water and record them in the science diary.
8. What can you see when the soda bottle is opened?
Answer: We can see bubbles of gas coming out from the bottle it is due to the dissolved carbon diode in soda water.

Answer: No, it is insoluble in water but it is soluble in coconut oil and kerosene.

Answer: No paint is insoluble in water it is soluble in kerosene.

Answer:

14. What is the unit for measuring liquids?
Answer: Litre.
15. What is the unit for measuring small quantities of liquids?
Answer: Millilitre (ml).
10cm x10cm x 10cm = 1000 cubic centimetre
That is
71000 cubic centimetre = litre.
1 cubic centimetre can also be called 1 millilitre
Therefore
1 litre = 1000 millilitre.
16. Major Portion of Water on the Earth is ----------
Answer: Sea Water (96.5%)
Pure Water (3.5%)
17. What are the water sources in and around your house?
Answer:
• Wells
• Ponds
• Rivers
18. How can water bodies be prevented from becoming polluted?
Answer:
• Avoid water bodies from pollution.
• Clean every water body by removing pollutants.
• Governments should take necessary action to protect water bodies.
• Avoid dumping waste from fish and meat markets.
19. How do water bodies get polluted?
Answer:
• Washing vehicles and bathing cattle in the river.
• Throwing plastic wastes into water sources.
• Dumping waste materials from fish and meat markets.
• Dumping waste from factories.
• Water from sewages.
• Spraying pesticides in agricultural fields
20. How is rain formed?
Answer:
The water from water bodies and plants reach the atmosphere in the form of water vapour due to the heat of the sun. The water vapour condenses in the form of clouds, gets cooled and comes down as rain.
21. What is evaporation and condensation?
Answer:
(a) Evaporation is the process by which liquid changes into vapour due to heat.
Eg: Water changing into water vapour.
(b) Condensation is the process by which vapour changes into liquid on cooling.
Eg: Water vapour changing into water.

Answer:
