1. Pick out the sentence that gives you the idea that the wise men could not understand anything about the corn. 
Answer: The wise man thought and thought, but couldn't make head or tail of it.

Answer: The King would get the help of old men especially the old peasants in his kingdom.

Let’s revisit the story

Answer: The wise men pondered over the corn and referred to different books.

Answer:  The great grandfather was hard-working, and had earned his living through his own labour.

Answer: When the great grandfather explained that men during his times lived by their own labour without being selfish and that they were much healthier, the king understood the merits of labour.

 4. How was the life of the people in olden days?
Answer: Men lived according to the law of nature. They had what was their own and coveted not what others had produced. The land belonged to all.

Activity 1
1. The journey of the big grain of corn started when the children playing found the corn in a ravine and ended when it reached the old peasant’s grandfather, who unfolded the details about the grain. Let’s complete the journey of the big grain of corn by filling in the empty boxes.
Activity 2
The king sent for the old man’s grandfather and he was brought before the king. The king showed him the grain. The great grandfather looked at it and smiled.
Imagine and write the possible conversation between the king and the great grandfather.
Answer:
King: Dear grandfather, can you tell where this corn was grown?
Great Grandfather: Everywhere, when I was young we were fed on it. Your Highness
King: Did you buy it anywhere?
Great Grandfather: Never, your Highness. We thought it a sin to buy or sell anything it 
King: Where did you grow corn like this?
Great grandfather: My field was God's earth. Nobody then owned any land.
King: Will you please answer two more questions of mine?
Great grandfather: Surely, My Lord.
King: Why did the earth bear such grains then and has ceased to do so now? Why are you healthier than your son and grandson?
Great Grandfather: I live by my own labour according to god's law and I am fully satisfied with what I have

Activity 3
3. Look at the pictures carefully.
Do you see flies hovering over the fruits in Basket A?
Why do you think there are no flies around the fruits in Basket B?
Discuss and write.
Answer: The fruits in basket B are coated with pesticides. Hence, there are no flies on it.

Activity 4
4. In Kerala, we buy most of the vegetables and food items from the market. But, there are many people who grow vegetables and food grains in their houses/farms/schools.
a. Name some vegetables and fruits that you can cultivate at home/in your school.
b. Now, write down the advantages of growing vegetables and fruits at home. The following hints will help you.
(fresh, pesticide-free, healthy life, nutritious, stress reduction, satisfaction, additional income, natural manure)
Answer:
b. We can lead a healthy life by cultivating vegetables and fruits at home. We must try to use only natural manure in our farm. Studies have proven that the cultivation and consumption of certain vegetables and fruits can reduce our stress. They not only give fresh and nutritious food but can also be a source of income for our family. As they are free from pesticides, they can never cause diseases like cancer, liver cirrhosis etc.

Activity 5
5. The king decided to honour the great grandfather. He organised a function to felicitate him. The great grandfather made a speech about the difference between the lifestyle and the methods of farming during his own time and that of the present generation. What would be the likely speech made by the great grandfather? Write the speech using the hints given in the box below.
Answer: 
Honourable His Majesty, the king and the courtiers, 
I am very happy that the court has decided to felicitate me. It is a great honour for a peasant like me and I am only happy to share with you the details of lifestyle and farming during our time. At that time, my grandfather and I lived by our own labour. No one coveted what others had produced, We used natural methods of cultivation. People were not selfish and self-centred so - were much happier healthier than the present generation. But what is going on now? People live by depending on others. Moreover, they are jealous and greedy. Now farmers have a profit motive. So they use artificial methods of cultivation that lead to dreadful diseases.
I don't want to prolong my speech. I convey my wholehearted gratitude
to His Majesty, the King. Before I conclude I have a humble request to the
king, to promote natural methods of cultivation for the sake of all our
people.

The old peasant has poor eyesight. He is greedy, lazy and unhealthy. He is irrational and selfish. He is toothless and his speech is indistinct. He is deaf too.

The great grandfather is a generous man with bright eyesight and sharp ears. He is hardworking and healthy. He is rational and unselfish. His speech is quite clear

So he issued orders to began farming in all parts of the kingdom as early was possible. The king offered hundred gold coins for the best farmer, which makes the best result in farming.
