a. What is the news report about?
Answer: the news report is about the death of a ten-year-old girl.
b. What is the reason for the girl’s death?
Answer: by the torture of her stepmother
c. What would you do, if such a thing happened in your locality?
Answer: I would inform the police station or childline
d. Have you ever come across such incidents in your life?
Answer: ...........................

Cinderella

1. What advice did the dying mother give her daughter?
Answer: When she felt that her end was drawing near, she called her only daughter near her and said, ‘Dear child, be good and pious, and God will always take care of you. I will look upon you from heaven, and will be with you.’

2. What happened to the mother’s grave when winter came?
Answer: When winter came, the snow covered the grave with a white covering.

3. Cinderella was ill-treated by her stepmother and stepsisters. What could be the reasons?
Answer: Cinderella was more beautiful than the stepsisters. Though the stepsisters were beautiful and fair in appearance, at heart they were wicked and ugly. The stepmother was a proud and unkind woman. 

4. Why is Cinderella called so?
Answer: As she had no bed to lie upon, she had to rest on the hearth among the cinders. She always looked dusty and dirty, as she slept in the cinders. So they named her Cinderella.

5. ‘You can go when beggars hold a ball.’ What would be the feelings of Cinderella to this comment?
Answer: She felt very sad and she cried, she too liked to go to the party. she thought of her own mother. If her mother had been alive she would have sent her to the ball.

6. ‘If my mother had been alive, she would have sent me to the ball.’ Why does Cinderella think so?
Answer:  Cinderella's mother was no more. She was living with her stepmother and her daughters. The stepmother was a proud and unkind woman. 

7. What changes occurred to the following things?
a. Pumpkin
b. Mice
c. Lizards
d. Rags
Answer: Pumpkin- red coach
Mice - white horses
Lizards - footmen
Rags - beautiful clothes of silk and gold

8. What will happen to Cinderella if she cannot return home before 12 o’clock?
Answer: If Cinderella cannot return home before 12 o’clock, the magic will end and everything will be back to the original form.

9. Had Cinderella appeared in her old clothes, how would the prince have treated her?
Answer: If Cinderella had appeared in her old clothes, she wouldn't have to get permission to attend the ball.

10. Why did Cinderella pretend to be asleep?
Answer: She wanted to show them that she was at home.

11. Cinderella forgot the words of her fairy godmother, on the second day. What may be the reason?
Answer: She was enjoying the party with the prince. So she forgot the words of her fairy godmother.
12. ‘This news excited the ladies.’ What is the news referred to?
Answer: The prince would visit every home to find out the lady.  This news excited the ladies.

13. Pick out sentences which show that the stepmother and her daughters were greedy and overambitious.
Answer: 
* Then, her mother handed her a knife, and said, ‘Cut the toe off, for when you are a Queen, you will never have to go on foot.’ So the girl cut off her toe, squeezed her foot into the shoe. 
* Then her mother handed her the knife, saying, ‘Cut a piece off your heel; when you are the Queen, you will never have to go on foot.’ So the girl cut off a piece of her heel and thrust her foot into the shoe.

14. ‘Cinderella pardoned her sisters and took them to the palace.’ What quality of Cinderella is revealed here?
Answer: Sympathetic

Let’s revisit the story

1. Cinderella had to suffer because of the bad treatment from her stepmother and stepsisters. Write briefly about her sufferings and her reactions to it.
Answer:  Cinderella's stepmother was a proud and unkind woman. Though the stepsisters were beautiful and fair in appearance, at heart they were wicked and ugly. They made cinderella a kitchen maid. She had to do all the works till morning tonight. They took away her pretty dresses and forced her to put on an old grey one. She always looked dusty and dirty, as she slept in the cinders. But she didn't react to those situations. She cried and thought about her mother.

2. Cinderella left one of her glass shoes in the ballroom. How did this incident change her life?
Answer:  The prince noticed the most beautiful girl among them and danced with him. As the time was over, she left the hall without one of her glass shoes. The prince fell in love with her and searched for the owner of that glass shoe. When he found that cinderella was the owner of the shoe, he identified the beautiful girl who danced with him. If she didn't leave that shoe in the hall, the prince might not identify her.

3. Is Cinderella a lovable girl? Why do you think so? Pick out sentences to substantiate your answer.
Answer: 
Yes. Cinderella is a lovable girl.
* The maiden went every day to her mother's grave and wept, and remained
pious and good.
* There she was made to do heavy work from morning to night.
* In the evenings, she was quite tired after the day's hard work.
* Cinderella pardoned her sisters and took them to the palace.

Activity 1
Read the following passage.
Cinderella begged her stepmother to allow her to attend the ball.
‘What! You Cinderella! In all your dust and dirt, you want to go to the ball! You have no dress and no shoes! You want to dance!’ She turned her back to Cinderella and hurriedly set out with her two proud daughters. When Cinderella lost sight of them, she felt very sad. She started crying. Tears rolled down her cheeks.
Wiping her tears, she began to think. What would be the thoughts of Cinderella?
Answer: Oh god! Do you see anything that bothers me? why did you call my mother back so early? If my mother is here, she will send me to the ball that I wish to go. But now stepmother controlling me and she does not allow me to go. I have two sisters with me. My stepmother made them
more beautiful and sent them to the ball. They did not take me with them to the ball. How could I go? I have only these rags with me. They treat me like a kitchen maid. What a faith I have? Dear God, please give me a way to
attend the ball. Please help me.

Activity 2
The prince became very sad when Cinderella left him. His servants brought him the glass shoe that Cinderella had left in the room. He wanted to find out the beautiful girl who had danced with him. The next day, he sent messengers to announce that the prince would visit every home to find out the lady... Finally, the prince came to Cinderella’s house.
Let’s develop a skit based on the events that made Cinderella the prince’s bride.
The following ladder of events will help you develop the skit.
The prince makes Cinderella his bride.
Cinderella tries the glass shoe and it fits her well.
Cinderella’s stepsisters try the glass shoe.
The prince visits Cinderella’s house.

Curtain rises.
[A well-decorated room of Cinderella’s house. Cinderella’s stepmother and
stepsisters are eagerly waiting for the prince. A courtier enters and announces the arrival of the prince.]

Courtier: His majesty is arriving here.
(The prince enters and all were excited.)
Prince: ‘How many girls are here?
Stepmother: Two your majesty.
Prince: Call them to try this glass shoe.
Stepsister 1: Oh! Your majesty, it is my shoe. I left it in the ball.
(Prince give her the shoe. The stepmother and stepsister 1 went to another room to try the shoe)
Stepmother: Try this dear.
Stepsister 1: But mother it is so short for me. My toes are not entering into the shoe.
Stepmother: Cut the toe off with this knife. When you are a queen, you will never have to go on foot.
(Stepsister 1 does so and after that, they appear before the prince. Prince looks at her feet and draws back in horror. )
Prince: Oh! Blood! Not the right bride. Go.
Stepmother: Your Majesty, maybe it is my other daughter's shoe.
Prince (to the stepsister 2): Okay. You try it.
(Stepmother and stepsister 2 went to another room to try the shoe. )
Stepsister 2: Oh! My heel doesn't enter into the shoe.
Stepmother: Cut your heel with this knife. When you are the queen, you will never have to go on foot.
(They enter in front of the prince. Prince notices the blood and becomes angry).
Prince: There is blood in your shoe also. This is not the right bride at all.
(Cinderella enters)
Cinderella: Your majesty, let me try it?
Stepmother: You ugly creature! How dare you to come in these dirty rags?
Stepsister 1&2: Go out of the room.
Prince: No, You stand here. You can try this shoe.
(Cinderella sits down and tries on one shoe. Then she takes the other shoe from her pocket and wears).
Prince (Surprised ): Oh! She is my right bride. She is my right bride. lam happy.
(Cinderella smiles and bows her head).
Prince: Come with me, my dear. You are my bride.
Cinderella: Sure my lord.
(At that time fairy godmother enters and blessed the couple ).
Activity 3
The prince invited the girls in the land to the ball through a public announcement. This was the announcement read by the messenger in public places. (TextBook Page 52)
The prince chose Cinderella as his bride. The prince asked the messenger to make an announcement in public places around the kingdom about the royal wedding. Prepare the announcement.

We usually invite friends and relatives for parties or celebrations. Here are two such invitations. Read them.
Now, design an invitation card for your birthday.
Include details like:
• Whom you want to invite.
• Where the venue is.
• When it will be.
