Chapter 06: A Little Effort, Lot of Work - Questions and Answers, Teaching Manual & Teachers Handbook
1. What are the different ways in which you husk coconut at home?
• Using an axe
• Using a chopper
• Using the coconut husking device

2. Which of these methods is most commonly used? Why?
Using the coconut husking device. It makes our work easy.

3. what are simple machines?
Devices that make any work easier are known as simple machines.

4. Don’t you use other simple machines also at home?
Look at the pictures of some simple machines.
Tabulate in your science diary the tasks made easier by these devices.
5. What are
Levers?
Levers are rigid rods that are free to turn about a fixed point.

6. What are the uses of Levers?
Levers are simple machines because they make our work easier.

7. What is Fulcrum?
The point about which a lever turns is called the ‘Fulcrum’

8. What is an Effort?
The force that we apply on the lever at a fixed point is known as Effort.

9. What is Resistance?
The resistive force that is overcome by the effort is called Resistance.

10. Is the fulcrum of all levers situated between effort and resistance?
Not always. In some levers, effort comes in the middle while in others it is
resistance.

11. Mark the fulcrum, resistance and effort in the figures of levers given below.
12. Observe the pictures. Where on the spoon should you hold in order to open the lid of the tin easily?
-
By holding and pressing the spoon at the top,  we can lift the lid from a tin very easily.

13. Observe the pictures. Which method of drawing water is easier?
- Pulley makes work easier. So pulley is a simple machine

How does the pulley make the work easier?
Discuss using the following hints.
Where do we apply force to lift the bucket in both cases?
Is the force applied in the same direction in both cases?
- If we lift the bucket using a pully, we apply force in the downward direction. But without pully, the force is applied in the upward direction.

13. How does the change in the direction of force help us to make the work easy?
It is too difficult to lift water directly from the well.
When a fixed pulley is used, there is no gain in the force to be applied, but it facilitates the work by changing the direction of the force applied.
It is always easier to apply the effort to lift a load in the downward direction rather than in the upward direction. One can use one's own body weight while applying the effort in the downward direction.

14. Enlist in your science diary the various situations in which work is made easier with the help of a pulley.
* In cranes
* To transport heavy objects from one point to another, Khalasees use pulleys.
* While digging ponds/wells, to bring up mud, stones etc.
* To lift vehicles from accident places.

15. What are wheels and axles?
The rod connecting both wheels helps to move the wheels simultaneously. This arrangement is the wheel and axle.
Example:- Toy car, cycle, wheelbarrow etc

16. What is Inclined Plane?
An inclined plane consists of a sloping surface; it is used for raising heavy bodies.

17. Does an inclined plane reduce our workload?
List some situations.
(a) Labourers load heavy logs of wood in a lorry. big logs of wood kept inclined to make the work easier.
(b) The wedge used by the carpenter is another form of an inclined plane.
(c) It is easy to hammer a nail into a wall because the end of a nail has inclined surfaces.

Let us assess
1. A road to the hilltop is to be constructed. The distance would be less if a
straight road is built. In spite of this, the engineer suggested the construction of a winding road. What may be the reason for this?
- Instead of climbing up the hill strait, it is easier to go up an inclined pathway.

2. Don’t you see the use of a crowbar to reduce workload in the two situations in the pictures? Do you notice any change in the position of effort, fulcrum and resistance in the two situations?
Yes,
In 1st situation, Fulcrum is between effort and resistance.
In 2nt situation, Resistance is between fulcrum and effort.

3. Find out the levers you use at home and tabulate them as shown below.
