Chapter 09: Space - A World of Wonders - Questions and Answers, Teaching Manual & Teachers Handbook
1. What is space?
The vast empty region beyond the earth’s atmosphere is space.

2. How many celestial bodies can you name? Write them down in the science diary.
• Earth
• Moon
• Sun
• Mars
• Mercury
• Venus
• Jupiter
• Saturn
• Uranus
• Neptune

3. Who was the first human in space?
Vostock – 1, the spacecraft of the Soviet Union, took Yuri Gagarin, the first cosmonaut (Astronaut), to space on 12th April 1961.

4. Complete the concept map given below.
5. What are Artificial satellites?
- Artificial satellites are vehicles containing devices and sent to space by human beings for different purposes.

6. What are the uses of Artificial satellites?
• Identifying Land resources (petroleum, minerals)
• To identify fishery resources
• Climatology
• For Communication (TV, radio, mobile phone, internet)
• For the Study of forest lands and wetlands
• For Military, and Defense activities
 For Space research
• To provide guidelines for Land-sea-air transport

7. Space Week
- Sputnik – 1, launched on 4th October 1957 by the Soviet Union, is the first artificial satellite. The space age began with its launching. Internationally, October 4 to 10 is observed as ‘space week’. This week is observed to commemorate the launching of Sputnik-1 on 4th October 1957 and the signing of the International Space Peace Agreement on 10th October 1959.

8. Which is India’s first artificial satellite?
- Aryabhatta (1975)

9. The first creature from earth to reach space is ---------.
- Laika (A dog from the Soviet Union in 1957)

10. The largest rocket ever made is ------------.
- Saturn – 5  (Developed by NASA (USA))

11. Who was the first Indian who conducted a space journey?
- Rakesh Sharma

12. Which Astronaut of Indian origin was tragically killed in an accident that occurred to the space shuttle, Columbia?
- Kalpana Chowla

13. Write the two world records got by Sunitha Williams?
(i) the woman who has spent the longest time in space and
(ii) the woman who walked for the longest time in space.

14. You have now learnt about the space experiences of Sunitha Williams. Write down the reasons for her experiences in the science diary.
 Experiences  Reasons
Can see day and night on the earth simultaneously As it is far away, the earth can be seen as a whole.
An ant or an astronaut does not experience weight Because there is no gravitational force in the space
Air for breathing has to be carried from the earth There is no air in the space
Cannot sleep well on a mattress There is no gravitational force in the space
Stars can be seen even in day time. The sky appears black

15. Which day is celebrated as Moon Day? Why?
- The Americans,  Neil Amstrong and Edwin Buz Aldrin were the first to land on the moon on 21st July 1969. The spacecraft Appolo II of the American Space Agency, NASA was used for this. The astronaut, Michel Collins also accompanied them, controlling the flight of the vehicle. July 21, the anniversary of the day humans first laid their foot on the moon is celebrated as Moon Day.

16. Who is known as the ‘Father of Indian space programmes.’?
- Vikram Sarabhai

17. Space agencies of different countries.
• INDIA - ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation)
• USA - NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration)
• Europe - ESA (European Space Agency)
• Japan - JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency)
• Russia - RSA (Russian Space Agency)
• China - CNSA (China National Space Administration)

18. Indian satellites and their services.
INSAT: The satellites we depend on for communication are the INSAT series.
Eg: Television, Mobilephone, Internet

IRS: satellites are used for needs like study of earth resources, study of weather etc.

Edusat: The satellite we use for educational purposes.

19. Write a note about Chandrayaan-1.
Chandrayaan-1, India’s first mission to Moon was launched on 2nd October 2008. The presence of water on the moon was detected by Chandrayaan. It was a remarkable achievement for this mission.

Let us assess
1. Did you utilise any service of artificial satellites yesterday and today? Explain.
Yes, I utilized the service of artificial satellites yesterday and today.
I have watched television, listened to the radio, used my mobile phone and searched on the internet. These services are provided by artificial satellites.

2. How does the living conditions of an astronaut in a space station differ from your living conditions at home?
Living conditions of an astronaut in a space station-
When we are in space, we do not feel our weight because of the absence of gravity. We cannot walk in the space station because of weightlessness. We need to carry air from the earth because of the absence of oxygen in space. We cannot bathe with water in the space station but we use a wet sponge and scrub it. We cannot sleep on the bed but the body has to be fastened with a belt to the cot that is firmly fixed.
 Living conditions at home-
When we are on the earth, we can feel our weight because of the presence of gravity. We can walk at home because we can feel our weight. We need not carry air because of the presence of oxygen in the earth. We can bathe with water at home. We can sleep soundly on the bed.

3. "Artificial Satellites provide us with many facilities of life we enjoy today." Do you agree with this statement? Discuss.
Yes, artificial satellites provide us with many facilities of life we enjoy today. The satellites we depend on for communication INSAT series. IRS satellites are used for needs like the study of earth resources, study of weather etc. Edusat is the satellite we use for educational purposes. We have launched many satellites for various purposes in the IRS and INSAT series. We also use satellites for Study of forest lands and wetlands, Military, defense activities, To provide guidelines for land-sea-air transport, to identify fishery resources, etc.

4. India is a great power in the field of space today. Evaluate.
India is advancing very fast in the field of space research. India’s space research agency ISRO is working for the betterment of India’s space research capability. We have many satellites in space for different purposes.  India has recently launched Chandrayaan-1, the first mission to the moon. This mission detected the presence of water on the moon. Mangalyaan, the mission to Mars, Adithya- the solar mission etc. belong to the space programmes of India. ISRO is one of the six government space organisations in the world that possess full launch capabilities.
