About the author: Helen Keller (1880-1968)

Helen Keller (1880-1968) was born in Alabama, USA. She lost her sight and hearing nineteen months after birth due to an undiagnosed brain disease. She went on to become the first differently abled person to graduate in America. She was considered one of 100 most influential people in the country. Today Helen Keller is a symbol of determination, endurance and struggle. Her autobiography 'The Story of My Life' is a record of her struggles and success.

Answer the following questions

1. How did Helen get her name?
Initially, her father wanted to name her Mildred Campbell after a highly esteemed ancestor. But in the excitement of carrying her to church, her father forgot the name on the way. When the church minister asked him for it, he gave the name Helen Adams. 

2. Why does Helen say she showed many signs of an eager, self-asserting disposition?
Helen showed many signs of an eager, self-asserting disposition when she was still a baby. She insisted upon imitating everything that she saw other people doing. She was curious and proactive, learning to say simple words like “How d’ye” and “tea” before her illness. 

3. Why didn't Helen's happy days last long?
Helen Keller’s happy days didn’t last long because, at just one-year-old, she was struck by an illness that left her both blind and deaf. 

4. What tragedy struck Helen in February?
In February, she was struck by the illness which closed both her eyes and ears forever. 

5. Why were the first nineteen months of Helen Keller's life different?
The first nineteen months of Helen Keller’s life were different because she could see and hear during that time. She experienced the world through sight and sound and interacted with her surroundings. This changed drastically after she lost her vision and hearing due to illness.
