Answer:
Time: afternoon
Place: A road in front of the house
Character: A cyclist

2. Why did the cyclist ring the bell and shout?
Answer:
He shouted that he saw a cobra entering the compound of the house.

3. What did the members of the family accuse the gardener of?
Answer: The members of the family accused the gardener for his carelessness.

4. What do you mean by ‘snake menace’? Have you heard of any other such menaces?
Answer: It means the threat from the snakes. Other one I heard was mad dog menace.

5. Why did the mother give a coin to the beggar?
Answer: For helped her to remember a  promised ‘abhishekam’.

6. What did the old man declare?
Answer: The old man declared that he would catch the cobra.

7. Why did the snake charmer say that he was helpless?
Answer:  Because he didn't see the cobra. If he saw the cobra he would catch it. Otherwise, he was helpless.

8. How did Dasa become the hero of the day?
Answer: Dasa became the hero of the day by catching the cobra and sealing it in a pot.

9. Do you think there were two snakes in the premises? Give reasons for your answer.
Answer: I think there was only one snakes in the premises. Dasa was fooling them.
   
10. The major events of the story ‘A Snake in the Grass’ are given in jumbled order.
Now, sequence the events in the flow chart given below.

* A big cobra entered the compound.
* The family was greatly agitated to hear the news.
* Dasa’s negligence of the garden and the lawns was responsible for all the dreadful things coming in.

2. Imagine that the mother in the story 'A Snake in the Grass' happens to see the snake again. She rings up the snake charmer. But unfortunately, he is not there. She gets his wife on the phone.
Read the telephonic conversation.
Mother: Hello! Could I speak to Mr Sankar, the snake charmer?
Wife: Sorry he's not here. I'm his wife. May I know who is speaking?
Mother: I'm Sudha from Malgudi North. When will he be back?
Wife: After an hour. Would you like to leave a message?
Mother: Yes, please. We are in a fearful situation. A snake has entered our premises, and we are urgently in need of some help. Please ask him to call me back.  It's very urgent. He knows my number.
Wife: Sure. I’ll try to contact him. If not, I'll tell him as soon as he is back.
Mother: Thank you.
The wife could not contact Sankar, the snake charmer. The moment he
reaches the house, his wife conveys the message. He rings the mother
immediately. Prepare the likely conversation between them.
Answer:
Snake charmer: Madam, did you call me?
Mother: Yes, Mr Sankar. I need your help.
Snake charmer: What is the matter?
Mother: The snake again entered here.
Snake charmer: If I came, can | see it?
Mother: Yes, it is there in a corner hole.
Snake charmer: Ok. I will come soon.

3. Given below are a few tongue twisters. Take turns to read them aloud.

Curtain rises
(The courtyard of the house. The mother, her four sons, and servant Dasa are obviously frightened and are searching for a snake. An old beggar enters....)
Answer:
Old Beggar: Amma, give me alms, please.
Neighbour: Go away. A cobra has entered the compound.
Old Beggar: It is God himself who comes to you. Don't kill the snake.
Mother: (thinking) Oh, yes. It is! I forgot all about the promised ‘Abhishekam’. Maybe it is a reminder.
Old Beggar: Please, don't kill it. I will send a snake charmer. (she goes)
(sometimes later, an old man enters)
Old Man: I am a snake charmer.
(everyone gathers around him)
Neighbour: (curiously)How do you catch snakes?
Snake charmer: (pouncing upon an imaginary snake)Thus.
Mother: (point to a side) The cobra has gone this way. Maybe it is there.
Snake charmer: (helplessly) If you show the snake, I will catch it at once. Otherwise, I am helpless. You do one thing. When you see the snake send for me. I live nearby. (exists)
(The neighbours retire to the veranda. They began to discuss various measures they would take to protect themselves against reptiles in the future. Later Dasa, waterpot. Its mouth is sealed with a slab of stone)
Dasa: Look. I've caught him. I saw him peeping out of a hole. I saw him before he could see me. (everybody stands astonished)
Mother: Dasa, you have saved us.
Neighbour: We shall reward you adequately
Dasa: Thank you. I am going to give the snake to the snake charmer (goes)
(few minutes passed away)
The youngest son : (pointing to the compound wall) See there! There is a
big snake. (Everybody looks and see a big cobra coming out of a hole in the
compound wall. It glides along towards the gate, pauses for a moment to look at the gathering with its hood half-raised, disappears along a drain.)
Neighbour: Does it mean there are two snakes here?
The eldest son: (murmuring) I wish I had taken the risk and knocked the water-pot from Dasa's hand. We might have known what it contained.
Mother: What are you saying?
The boy: Nothing. I am thinking. (curtain)
