1. Why did the people admire the statue of the Happy Prince?
Answer: The statue was covered with thin leaves of fine gold. It had two bright sapphires for its eyes and a large red ruby glowed on its sword hilt. it was that much beautiful and elegant that the people admired it.

Answer: The Statue of the happy Prince was on a high pillar. He could see all the ugliness and misery of his people. That made him sad.

Answer: The boy was suffering from a fever and asking for oranges. His mother had no money to buy oranges. She gave him river water. That made him cry.
9. Why was the swallow not ready to help the woman at first?
Answer: The swallow was on his way to Egypt to save himself from the approaching winter. He lost his friends on the way and wishes to meet them as soon as possible. So that he was not ready to stay with the prince.
10. Why do some children throw stones at animals and birds? Have you ever prevented them?
Answer: Some children throw stones at animals in fear that they may attack them. Some others find happiness in doing that. Hurting animals and birds is not a good habit.
11. Why did the swallow agree to be the messenger of the Happy Prince?
Answer: The Prince looked so sad that the little swallow felt sorry for him and agreed to stay one night and be his messenger

1. The swallow’s friends had gone away to Egypt to save themselves from the approaching winter. Why do you think the swallow alone was left behind?
Answer: The swallow was going to Egypt with his friends. He stopped at the city to break the long journey. He might be very tired. So the swallow needed to take the rest.
2. ‘Sorrow was not allowed to enter the palace.’ What picture do you get about the palace of the Prince from these words?
Answer:
• The Prince's palace was a place of prosperity and he was leading a royal life there.
• He enjoyed all kinds of pleasures and luxuries in the palace.
• He would get everything he wished.
• As he never faced any hardships, he didn't know what was Sorrow.
3. ‘...we swallows fly far too well for that.’ What did the swallow mean by these words?
Answer:
• The swallow meant that swallows can fly fast and high up in the sky.
• This was told when he mentioned about the two rude boys who threw stones at him.
• but the stones did not hit him because he is skilful to escape from such attacks
4. In the beginning of the story the swallow was not ready to stay with the Prince. What change do you notice in the swallow’s character as the story progresses? Pick out sentences to support your answer.
Answer:
• At first the swallow was not ready to help the Prince as he was in a hurry to join his friends.
• but the swallow was kind and good at heart.
• So when the Prince became sad, the swallow felt sorry and decided to stay and help him.

The statue of the Happy Prince in the Town Square was pulled down yesterday as per the order from the Mayor of the town. The statue was removed as it was found to be no longer beautiful or useful. During a visit by the Mayor, he found that the ruby and sapphire stones and the gold coverings on the statue were missing and it has lost all its sheen and glamour. A dead bird was also found near the feet of the statue which added to its shabby look. It took a team of 100 workers to pull down the huge statue and remove the column from the square. Many of the town residents were sad witnesses.
2. The swallow is an important character in the story. Describe the swallow in your own words.
The swallow took shelter under the statue of the Happy Prince. The swallow was on its way to Egypt to join his friends. He found that the Prince was sad and felt sorry for him and decided to stay and help him. He acted as the messenger of the Prince and thus helped many people. Even though he wanted to fly and join his friends, he decided to stay back as he loved the prince deeply. At last, winter came and he could no more keep his body warm and fell dead at the prince's feet. The story shows that the swallow was kind and good-hearted and sacrificed his life for others.
3. The swallow approached the Match-girl. He slipped the sapphire into her hands. The girl looked at the swallow in surprise.
Imagine their conversation and write it below.
Match-girl: Wow, this is a beautiful piece of glass.
Swallow: It is not glass, it is a valuable stone called Sapphire.
Match-Girl: Where did you get this from?
Swallow: It is from the happy prince. He asked me to give it to you.
Match-girl: I will go give it to my father. He will be so happy
Swallow: Keep it safe in your hands.
4. Winter was fast approaching. The swallow wanted to go to Egypt. All his friends were waiting for him there. But the Happy Prince wanted him to stay.
That night the swallow sank into deep thought.
What could his thoughts be? Write them down.
When the Prince asked the swallow to stay back, the swallow hesitated. At night the swallow thought“ All my friends are waiting for me in Egypt. I don't know what reply to give to the prince in the morning. I want to help the prince. But how will I keep my body warm when it becomes too cold? How will my friends know! am staying here. May b I should stay for a day, act as his messenger and help the boy and mother and then leave.”
5. The Mayor decided to remove the statue of the Happy Prince. Do you agree to his decision? Write a letter to the Mayor stating your opinion.

I wish you had ordered for a renovation instead of demolishing it.
We all hope you will take steps to reinstate the statue with its old glory and elegance. Please do the needful for the same.
