The Wooden Cup

1. How did the grandfather entertain the boy? What does it show?
Answer: The grandson enjoyed sitting on his grandfather's knee and listening to the stories told by him. He would tell Fairy tales and exciting hunting stories. This shows that grandfather was a great storyteller.

2. Why did the mother speak angrily? What was the grandfather’s reaction?
Answer: One night at dinner, while grandfather was trying to drink coffee, it spilled on the white tablecloth as his hand shook. So Robertino's mother spoke angrily to the old man. But grandfather never said a word in reply, but only looked at her with sadness in his eyes.

3. What made the kitchen a beautiful land?
Answer: Grandfather was asked to eat alone on a small table in the kitchen and so the grandchild used to finish his dinner early and run to his grandfather to accompany him. His company made the kitchen a beautiful land.

4. Is the mother right in thinking of giving the old man a wooden cup? Justify your answer.
Answer: No. I don't think the mother was right in thinking of giving the old man a wooden cup as the man should be of more importance than the utensils. Giving him a wooden cup only because he broke utensils due to his shaking hands shows the utensils were of more importance to the lady even though the old man did not do it on purpose.

 5. Pick out the expressions that show the boy’s love for his grandfather.
Answer:
• Robertino was also very unhappy. Poor, dear Grandfather!
• I'm making a wooden cup for you to have when you grow old

6. How did the boy teach his parents the lesson of love?
Answer: Robertino took a piece of wood and began to make a wooden cup. His mother enquired him what he was doing. His answer was that he was making a wooden cup for her mother to have at her old age.

7. Do you like Robertino? Why?
Answer: Yes. I like him very much. He knows how to take care of his grandparents well. He also taught his parents a good lesson that they should love and care for their parents.

1. You have noticed that Robertino loved his grandfather very much. Don’t you love your grandparents? How would you care for your grandparents?
Write in a paragraph.
Answer: I love my grandparents very much. They used to tell stories for me. I like to sleep with them. My grandma knows beautiful lullabies. I always go with my grandpa for my haircut. He brings sweets for me in those evenings. They are my friends too.

2. Don't you remember the stories your parents and grandparents told you? How did you feel then? Recollect a story and present it in the class. You may also describe the feelings you had, when you listened to it.
Answer: 
The lion and The Slave
A slave, ill-treated by his master ran away to the forest. There he came across a lion in pain because of a thorn in his paw. The slave bravely moved forward and removed the thorn gently. The lion went away without hurting him. Some days later, the slave's master came hunting to the forest. He caught many animals and caged them. The slave was spotted by the master's men who caught him and brought him to the cruel master. He asked for the slave to be thrown into the lion's cage. The slave was awaiting for his death in the cage when he realised that it was the same lion he had helped. The lion did not hurt him. That night the slave rescued the lion and all other caged animals.
I felt really good listening to the story.
My grandmother always tells me wonderful stories. as grandma makes me sleep she would tell me stories about her life, friends, family matters of course her birthplace. she would tell the same stories over and over to me and my cousins. she is never tired of telling stories and they always seem to bring a smile to her face.

3. Describe any memorable incident that happened when you were with your grandparents. Role-play it in the classroom.
Answer: When was a kid my grandfather used to take me to a park nearby our house which had nothing but a tree with a tyre hanging to it. He taught me to use it as a swing and play on it. He used to hold my hand all the way to the park and back. After returning my grandmother served me with some snacks and tea and then sat with me to play or narrate stories.

4. See how happy Robertino and his grandfather were in the kitchen. Imagine how they spent time with each other. Describe such a scene.

Answer: Every night after dinner Robertino used to run to their grandfather to accompany him to his table. Grandfather used to then talk to him about his day and narrate new stories and incidents. The kid used to tell him what he did at school and how he had fun with his friends. The dinner stories were then carried to the bed and the kid was put to sleep by his grandfather.

5. You have seen how love binds all members of the family together. No wonder, love is the string of a necklace, the beads of which are the members of the family. You must have had a lot of happy occasions when your family and relatives got together. Describe any such occasion in your own words. (Birthdays, weddings, etc.)
Answer: I remember the best day with my family is my younger sister's birthday. My parents, grandparents, uncles, and aunts of them were in my home. We celebrated with dance and music. It was really a good day.

6. Grandparents’ Day is celebrated in many countries for honouring grandparents.

Answer: Robertino got upset when his mother decided to give his grandfather a wooden cup. He taught his parents a good lesson about love by telling them that he was making a wooden cup for his mother to have when she grew old. His words acted as an eye-opener to his parents and they repented. They began to love and care for their father. That's how Robertino brought back love and happiness to his home.
